I've recently had an awakening in the area of home video. A little history: I've always hated the look of home movies. Blurry, jittery image, low quality; everything that I love about still photography is nowhere to be found in the area of camcorder video. This has been bugging me lately, because with two little ones at home now I really want to capture them on video. But I rarely get the camcorder out because I know I won't like the results. So, I did a ton of late night reading on the internet in the area of videography and stumbled across some amazing looking short films that were all shot with miniDV (the format of home camcorders). After studying these and more reading, it finally hit me like a ton of bricks: I need to think of shooting video in the same way that I shoot with my DSLR 35mm camera.
What I've posted here is my first attempt at making a "short film" of Ashlyn. I've tried to capture her essence, her personality, all that good stuff, in less than a minute and a half. Let me know if you think I succeeded.
(techno disclaimer: if you're using Firefox or Camino on a Mac, I recommend right-clicking the video and save it to your desktop in order to view it with Quicktime player. There is a weird gamma shift that will make the colors oversaturated in Firefox. All other browsers and platforms should be ok.)
