Why I Sold My D300...

(VIDEO removed to save bandwidth)

...and "downgraded" to the D90. This little video clip holds the answer.
Over the past 2 years I've been obsessed with trying to obtain the illusive "film look" from a camcorder, and have spent countless hours reading about depth-of-field adapters, frame rates, inverse telecines, and have also spent time and money on rigging my HV20 camcorder with 35mm adapters and lenses and etc. etc. etc.
Then, 2 months ago Nikon did the unthinkable and added video capability to their newest consumer DSLR, the D90. Most photographers scoffed at the idea, but for me it literally was a dream come true. With one device I can now take photos (that are better quality than the D300) and then with a press of one button take 720p HD video using the same lens and achieving the same DOF that the still photos give me.
One huge advantage of this camera over camcorders (even ones costing $5000) is it's low light capabilities. This clip you see above would look terrible if shot with the $1000 HV20 camcorder. It would be terribly grainy and the colors would be muted. The only light source is one 150 watt halogen bulb pointed at the ceiling. It was very dark in the living room. But, with the D90 it turned into magic. I did a little color correction and added the music in Final Cut Pro, but that was it.
I can't wait to get creative with this camera!!
